SEPTEMBER 2017

WELCOME

The first international break always affords time for reflection on the opening weeks of the season. A win against a poor Newcastle outfit was followed by a disappointing defeat to a depleted Chelsea and a underwhelming draw at 'home' to Burnley. The frustration was compounded when the club were handed an near impossible draw in the Champions League.

But the conclusion of the transfer window offers some home, and may allow us some cause for optimism. The talented Serge Aurier, Juan Foyth and Fernando Llorente joined Paulo Gazzaniga and Davinson Sanchez at Hotspur Way, and Daniel Levy will be delighted to have still made a profit before the window slammed shut.

We visit Everton on Saturday, and while none of the aforementioned signings may start, it would be difficult to argue that Tottenham are not stronger as a squad now, than what they were on the opening day of the season.

For those not familiar with Clive's achievements, Allen signed for Tottenham in 1984 and went on to score 112 goals in 173 appearances, including 49 in one season (1986/7). Capped five times by England, Allen was also voted PFA Player of the Year and Football Writers Player of the Year in 1987. He is the son of legendary double-winner Les Allen, and went on to play for Bordeaux, West Ham, Chelsea, West Ham and Manchester City.

He coached at Tottenham alongside Martin Jol and Harry Redknapp, stepping in as Caretaker Manager on two occasions. Allen played an integral part in the development of  both Harry Kane and Gareth Bale.

Clive has gone on to have a successful career in the media with TalkSport and Sky Sports in the UK, and it will be a fantastic honour to have Clive visit us in NZ.
